It's tough when you first enter this new and crazy world of the internet. It has a language all of its own. It can really slow you down when you just want to get on with the fun and functional things there are to do in this new world you've just discovered.
The learning curve is steep. Anything that can make your transition from beginner to experienced easier and flatten that curve has got to help. Say you are downloading a software program, nothing fancy just a quick download. You get a message come up that says it is in a Zip file. A what!?! What on earth is a Zip file?
Now imagine you had an icon on your desktop that all you had to do when this situation comes up is click on this icon and a file opens up with all the internet terms you could ever need. In this case: ZIP FILE (Compressed file): A file that has been compressed in order to take up less space on a hard drive or download faster over the Internet. Zip files are denoted by the extension .zip although some files may have an .exe extension which indicates that the file is self extracting. These files are compressed using a program like WinZip. To read the information the file must be uncompressed into its original form. A Zip file may contain viruses so make sure your anti-virus software scans for viruses in compressed files. Need WinZip to extract the information? WINZIP: A type of zip extraction software program designed for Microsoft Windows users. It is a commercial product with a free evaluation version you can download and trial.
