We all need to be aware and vigilant about the types of internet scams that are out there and protect ourselves.
Here are a few examples of the most common Internet scams you may come across: Nigerian scam You receive an email asking you to provide a safe bank account for the transfer of frozen or illegal funds. You are then asked to provide a financial contribution in order to bribe officials to cover a processing fee. After the money is sent to scammer they then disappear. Winner of Foreign Lottery (commonly called Dutch Lottery scam) You are notified that you have won a huge amount of money in a foreign lottery. Winnings will be forwarded after the payment of a substantial processing fee. Guess what? They take your money and run and you never hear from them again. Russian Bride Scam This Internet scam is particularly cruel as it preys on the lonely. Your lonely brother wants to find a life partner. He spends time on the Internet and comes across pictures of beautiful Russian girls who are supposedly looking for foreign partners and or future husbands. He begins to communicate via email with this beautiful girl. After a short period of time she writes and claims she has fallen in love with him and wants to visit. Unfortunately she has no money and needs a few thousand dollars sent usually through Western Union which is the preferred method of payment in any scam. Then other problems (mother ill, wallet stolen etc.) develop which leads to more money having to be sent. After the money is sent your lonely brother never hears from her again. Their email accounts are deleted and they disappear. Health Scam This Internet scam preys on those in desperate need of medicine and have very little money. You come across a website selling expensive medicines at well below market prices. You can’t believe your luck and pay for the drugs by submitting your credit card information. You then receive no drugs and start receiving unexplained charges on your credit card. Warning signs: - Are prices of products dramatically lower than other legitimate sites?
- Is a prescription required?
Job Posting ScamYou are fed up with your boss and are looking for a better job. You find a job posted on the Internet and send your resume. You receive a letter from a potential employer. The employer then requests additional information. You hear nothing further and you become a victim of Identity theft. Avoid all postings of “government” or “postal worker” jobs because they usually want you to pay for a study course. Job offers as Payment processors You are offered a job to accept payments provided by a company in the your country and to transfer those payments via Western Union to the host company. You are offered 5-15 % of each transaction. Sooner rather than later fraud is discovered and you are held responsible. This Internet scam has led to the imprisonment of innocent people who were conned. Account Confirmation by Email Scam for Ebay, PayPal or Your bank. You receive an email requesting that for security reasons you must verify your email address by clicking on the confirmation link and log into your account. The criminals now have your account information and can use it as they see fit usually by cleaning out your account of any money that you have in there. Harmful viruses are also sent across the internet in this manner as well. Delete all emails of this type. Never click on a link in one of these types of emails. Don’t login to your account using any of these links. Go to the specific website and log in and verify if there are any issues with your account. If there isn’t report the email to the account administrator. You make your initial investment and, of course, the company does not deliver. Only the people who originate these pyramid scheme and a few initial sales people make money. If no product is offered these schemes are illegal. Companies which use a similar business model but do offer actual products are legal and are called multi-level marketing companies. What to look out for: - Very little mention of an actual product
- Sales pitch repeatedly emphasizes how much money you will make
Chain letters are a type of pyramid scheme and are illegal. You are sent a letter and asked to send money to the person’s name at the top of the list. You are then asked to send out a number of letters to your contacts and cross out the top name and put your name at the bottom. You forward the letter on in the hope that your name will eventually be at the top and you will receive lots of money. They don’t work. Don’t waste your time!
