Downloading Programs and Files from the InternetDownloading programs and files from the Internet can be a real challenge when you are new to the whole computer, internet thing. Downloading is basically copying a program or file from a computer on the Internet to your own computer.
One of the biggest problems with downloading programs and files is finding them once you’ve downloaded them. Before you download have a think where you are going to file this information or program then you will be prepared when you are asked where you want to file it. Create a folder on your desktop (right click/New/Folder) called Downloads and always, I mean always, save your downloads to that folder. You can create separate folders within that folder for, say, music, software, video and games. If you choose to you can move or copy these files and programs to your hard drive later.
Adobe Acrobat ReaderAdobe Acrobat Reader is used to open and read most PDF files on the internet. You can download it free by clicking here. This will open a new browser window and you can download Acrobat Reader for free from there. SecurityMake sure you are downloading from a reputable site and that their downloads are virus free. It is highly recommended that BEFORE unzipping and installing files or programs that you scan them with you anti-virus program. It is simply a matter of right clicking the file then clicking on Scan with AVG or whatever anti-virus program you are using. Security software on your computer such as Norton or McAfee can block you from downloading files so you may need to adjust you settings. Visit their help menu to find out how to do this. You may also need to double check your browser settings and operating system settings. If this is all beyond you then you may need to get a techie (computer technical person) to come in and assist you to get set up to download files and programs off the internet. Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Internet Explorer 7 sometimes pop up a little yellow bar at the top of your screen when you try to download something. If this happens right click that bar and select Allow this download.
Download Management and SpeedIf you have a modem and a dial up connection downloading files can be a real nuisance because they take too long and your connection can be interrupted.
