Computers for seniors are an exciting addition to their lives. The technology is thrilling and stimulating to say the least. Computers open up a whole new world of possibilities such as new and lightning fast ways to communicate with family and friends. However before you get to the excitement you have to learn how to use them. This can seem like a daunting task but one that many seniors, with the right kind of help and support, have mastered successfully.


Seniors do have unique challenges to face when learning computers. Many have not studied in a long, long time and have been bypassed by the first wave of computer technology. It can seem like a daunting task. While their grandchildren have grown up with the technology and their children have often learnt it in adulthood they can feel like they have been left far behind. Family can be impatient when teaching their older relatives as computers are second nature to them.




There are many ways you can use computers and I’m sure you have a few in mind.



Computers for seniors do seem difficult at first glance and a lot of computer classes presume basic technical skills that this generation did not acquire. They missed that boat. Computer instruction for seniors needs to be designed with this in mind. Although seniors do have a harder time mastering basic computer skills and concepts they are very motivated and have inspiring perseverance.


The important thing to remember is that you need to believe that you can do it. Using computers is a great way to exercise the brain and opens up possibilities that are quite extraordinary. My 78 year old father is testament to this. He communicates with people of all ages from all over the world. He uses the internet to find new and exciting recipes to delight his wife. He does all his banking online and keeps an eye on his shares. When he heads off on his annual caravan trip he keeps in touch via email. He has only been using a computer for five years!
